The DarsGo device, or On-Board Unit (OBU), is a specialized microwave transmitter required for all vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 tons (trucks, buses, and heavy motorhomes) to pay tolls in Slovenia.
How the OBU works:
The device uses a microwave technology to communicate with 128 toll portals located across the highway network. As you pass under one of these bridges, it pings your OBU and automatically deducts the toll for that specific section.
Each OBU is programmed with your specific license plate and EURO emission class. It is strictly non-transferable between vehicles.
Physical Characteristics
- Mounting: It is a small, battery-powered plastic box that you stick to the inside of your windshield (usually behind the rearview mirror) using adhesive strips.
- No External Power: It does not need to be plugged into a cigarette lighter; it runs on an internal battery designed to last 5 to 7 years.
- The "Axle Button": This is the most important physical feature. Before every trip, the driver must press this button to set the correct number of axles (e.g., if you've added a trailer). The OBU will show a light indicating the current setting
OBU beeping sounds explained:
- 1 Beep: Transaction successful; your balance/link is fine.
- 2 Beeps: Transaction successful, but your prepaid balance is low.
- 4 Beeps: Error or battery low; you must visit a DarsGo Servis point immediately.
- No Beep (when passing under toll portal): The transaction failed; you risk a fine if you pass another toll portal without fixing it.
